Revisiting the whole systems approach: designing supply chains in a turbulent world

Purpose The systems approach is an exemplar of design science research (DSR), whereby specific designs yield generic knowledge. DSR increasingly being adopted in logistics and operations management research, but many point to neglect the human aspects solutions developed. authors argue that it possible look back at history movement seek precedent for ‘dealing’ with social components, providing a methodologically pluralistic ‘research design’ framework. Thereby, approaches are foundational design-based ‘science’ progressing supply chain field, dealing contemporary topics such as resilience. Design/methodology/approach undertake discursive assessment relevant streams engineering, conceptual development how latter influences approaches. Findings Building on phenomenological framework, create (DSRD) enables researchers choose integrate right tools methods address simple, complicated complex problems, technological, process problems.
